ChessFest Liverpool - What a Scorcher!

Liverpool ChessFest was a fantastic day out on Sunday 18th July for players of all ages as the sun shone on Liverpool ONE. Blistering temperatures made things tricky but the Liverpool ONE brollies came to the rescue and Liverpool ChessFest activities came people’s minds off the 35 degree heat!

We had over 50 chess sets constantly in use throughout the day and two fantastic electronic chess boards for those brave enough to have their game scrutinized on the giant screen for all to watch!

The giant screen became a focal point for those curious as to what was happening and proved a fantastic way of displaying our Puzzle Streak competition provided courtesy of our partners at ChessKid.com - with Mike Lacey from Manchester scoring a winning 17 tactics solved in a row.

The much anticipated London juniors vs. Liverpool juniors ended in victory with our Merseyside juniors winning both matches. Winners wore their king and queen crowns with pride afterwards!

GM Stephen Gordon and NM Roger Williamson gave simultaneous displays against 26 players each.

Stephen won 23 games with just one defeat against Richard Betts from Warrington and 2 draws against Richard Kelly and Yasser who has since joined Liverpool Chess club. Roger won 25 games and just one draw against Richard Kelly from Warrington who also drew with Stephen.

Roger, then went above and beyond the call of duty, taking on talented Liverpool junior Fred Lang in a blindfold game of chess. Remarkably, without sight of the board Roger managed to get the win.

No self-respecting chess festival would be complete without a giant set, and ChessFest was no exception, with the oversized set proving a smash hit and in continuous use throughout the day.

CSC Merseyside and Liverpool Chess Club would like to thank everyone who made the day happen, in In particular; GM Stephen Gordon, NM Roger Williamson, David Clayton, NFA Electrics, and Taylor Estates. The Liverpool ONE Team - Sylvia, Steph, Melody, Vicki, Liam and all their security staff.

Finally, a big thank you to the hundreds of chess players young and old who turned out to make the day so special. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2022!
